Swap Retreat

The SWAP Retreat will be held by Dr. Robinson, breast cancer thriver, creator of Hugs from Heavens for Sister Warriors podcast, and director of the Critical & Creative Design Thinking Program, along with Drs. Morris and McGladrey.

It will include individual reflection, group collaboration, and art creation where attendees can discuss vulnerability and their challenges with body image, sexuality, beauty and gender identity. Creative spaces provide breast cancer warriors and thrivers with a broad range of expressive tools to communicate these experiences, feelings and emotions that come with being a warrior/thriver.

Our attendees will be immersed in this space through creative dance provocations, journaling, and collaborative dance visuals in a way that communicates their relationship with their bodies.

Swap Photo Project

The SWAP Retreat will be held by Dr. Robinson, breast cancer thriver, creator of Hugs from Heavens for Sister Warriors podcast, and director of the Critical & Creative Design Thinking Program, along with Drs. Morris and McGladrey.

In this Photovoice project, participants will meet online weekly for four sessions after the in-person retreat. In the orientation session, we will discuss the ethics of photography and learn about the history and empowerment goals of the Photovoice method. We also will brainstorm a list of topics and issues that are most important for the community to understand about breast cancer thrivers' experiences. Then, participants will take photos illustrating nominated topics/issues between sessions. When we come back together for two photo discussion sessions, we will not only share photos but also discuss the prevalence of the topics illustrated with the photos, why the realities captured in our photos exist, and what should be done and who should be involved in any action. Between sessions, students conduct rapid analyses of photo discussion notes using the Socioecological Framework. These analyses are presented and discussed at subsequent sessions as a reflective exercise. A final session entails reviewing photos, revisiting photo discussion notes, and using those notes to write captions for all photos. Photo and caption combinations will be featured in PowerPoint, poster, and postcard graphic designs. Each group also brainstorms a list of ideas for action needed in our communities in light of what we learn in the Photovoice project.

There will be a total of four weekly sessions. After the first session, additional sessions will be scheduled based on participants’ availability.
