Sarasota-Manatee Regional Chancellor Karen Holbrook reflects on USF’s first year in
the AAU
AAU membership has drawn new attention to and appreciation for USF as an academic powerhouse. At USF Sarasota-Manatee, Holbrook said it is helping recruit new faculty to campus.
“They know who we are and what being in the AAU means when they consider their career options,” Holbrook said. “Many of the faculty we are recruiting mention it and are really impressed that we’ve become an AAU university. They want to be on our campus because of it. They want to be at USF.”
AAU membership helping accelerate USF’s impact
USF is using its place in the AAU to build on the institutional record for research funding set in fiscal year 2023. Since joining the AAU last year, USF has received $288 million in federal grants and contracts – up 5% from that same time the year prior.

Predictions of a busy hurricane season won’t drive up insurance costs, USF faculty
say
Forecasts of an active 2024 hurricane season, which officially started June 1, might make Florida homeowners fear their property insurance is about to get even more expensive. However, Randy Dumm, director of The Baldwin Group School of Risk Management and Insurance at USF Sarasota-Manatee, said there is not a direct link between the forecasts and what it costs to insure your home this year.

Faculty and students from the College of Education at USF Sarasota-Manatee are part of a community-wide effort to help two Manatee County elementary schools overcome the effects of poverty.

The upgrades and expansion will allow faculty members to incorporate the myriad financial and other data available via the Bloomberg Terminals into courses on finance and investing. Students will also be able to use the new machines to prepare for investment competitions against classmates and counterparts at other universities that measure their ability to analyze financial conditions and provide investment advice — skills that prepare them for careers on Wall Street and elsewhere in the financial services industry.
Ross DuBose ready to help faculty at USF Sarasota-Manatee boost their research work
“My highest priority here is getting to know all the faculty, finding out what their research is, finding out what they're interested in expanding their research into,” said DuBose, the new assistant director of research and innovation at the University of South Florida Sarasota-Manatee. “We're a small enough research institution here, a small enough campus, that I can meet everyone personally and have some idea of what they are interested in."
USF names new dean for the College of Arts and Sciences
USF announced the appointment of Elizabeth Spiller as the new dean of the College of Arts and Sciences. Spiller has more than 10 years of experience as an academic leader, having served most recently as the executive vice chancellor and chief academic officer at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln.
USF names new Muma College of Business dean
USF announced the appointment of David Blackwell as the new Lynn Pippenger Dean of the Muma College of Business. Blackwell comes to USF after serving as associate dean for professional graduate programs at the University of Kentucky’s Gatton College of Business and Economics.
USF’s Innovative Education helping revolutionize courses through generative AI
USF’s Innovative Education has made generative AI part of its broader strategy as it seeks to help faculty integrate it into online courses – serving as a test case for broader course instruction. USF students will soon see some changes in their courses.
USF to receive $3 million gift to support writing and communication students
The gift from Honey Rand, a USF alumna, local public relations practitioner, author and Sarasota native, will establish a creative writing retreat in the Humanities Institute and support students who are studying creative writing and communication.

Mock Trial Intensive — Hosted by the Judy Genshaft Honors College Summer Scholar Institute, the Mock Trial Intensive empowers students in grades 10-12 to learn the ins and outs of court proceedings, gain essential knowledge and develop critical thinking skills. From July 15-20, students will gain a basic understanding of the law and how it relates to the courtroom. Registration is open now.
