As the University of South Florida prepares to award more than 2,400 degrees during summer commencement Saturday, Aug. 5, two outstanding graduates from the Sarasota-Manatee campus — Jessica Rice and Dahlia Martinez-Singer — share stories of perseverence, hardship and success.

Construction of new student center and residence hall at USF Sarasota-Manatee campus reaches major milestone

Workers have reached a key moment in the construction of the first-ever residence hall on the University of South Florida Sarasota-Manatee campus. Crews have installed the first of almost 600 precast concrete panels that will make up the walls of the six-story, 100,000-square-foot student center and residence hall set to open for the fall 2024 semester.

INTRODUCING RANDY DUMM

Dumm joined the University of South Florida’s Baldwin Risk Partners School of Risk Management and Insurances in July, after more than six years as a professor and deputy chair of the Department of Risk, Insurance and Healthcare Management at Temple University in Philadelphia, the largest program in the country.

Boundless Bull: Cayla Lanier

Cayla Lanier, the assistant dean and campus director for the Judy Genshaft Honors College on the Sarasota-Manatee campus, is committed to creating opportunities for students to get outside of their comfort zones and expand their horizons. A graduate of the college, herself, Lanier’s passion for mentorship and fostering curiosity both in and out of the classroom is what brought her back to USF in 2008 and continues to motivate her to create engaging programs for students, including an annual study abroad trip to the Dominican Republic and this summer’s Mock Trial Intensive.

Endowed scholarship gives students the world

In an effort to make sure every student has the opportunity to study abroad, Regional Chancellor Karen Holbrook and her husband recently gave $25,000 to establish the Karen and James Holbrook Study Abroad Scholarship.

“The student who returns from a study abroad program is transformed. It makes such an impact on their lives and future careers," said Holbrook, who served as the first senior vice president of USF World.

University of South Florida sets new records for total donors and funds committed in a single year

The university received more than $157 million in philanthropic commitments last fiscal year from over 37,500 donors, setting records for both financial generosity and the number of supporters who chose to invest. This marks the fifth straight year that annual charitable giving benefitting the university surpassed $100 million and the second straight record-setting year over $150 million.

The four-day program immersed rising fifth, sixth and seventh graders in engaging reading activities designed to enhance their literacy skills and creativity with support from local teaching artists, USF student mentors and Sarasota-Manatee campus faculty and staff.

Every picture in Margaret McGladrey's PHOTOVOICE project tells a story about young people’s mental health

As a former journalist, Margaret McGladrey, an assistant professor in the Department of Mental Health Law and Policy on the Sarasota-Manatee campus, appreciates the power of words to tell a compelling story. But when it comes to certain topics, like young adults and teenagers comfortably sharing about their mental health challenges, a photograph may be the "safer,” more effective way to connect with an audience.

Newsweek ranks the university as one of America’s greatest workplaces for 2023. USF is the only university in Florida to appear on the list and one of only a small group of colleges and universities nationwide to be ranked.

Summer 2023 Commencement — Summer 2023 Commencement will be held on Saturday, Aug. 5 at the Yuengling Center.

USF Fast 56 Awards Recipients and Awards Celebration — Celebrate the 56 fastest-growing, Bull-owned businesses — including David J Reali, CPA; MADE; and Patel, Greene and Associates, LLC— on Friday, Sept. 8 in the Marshall Student Center with an array of inspired food stations, beer and wine.. RSVP by Aug. 26.

2023 Brunch on the Bay — Save the date! The marquee fund-raising event for the Sarasota-Manatee campus will return from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 5.
