High school students learn about Wall Street trading in the Bloomberg Lab

University of South Florida Sarasota-Manatee's Bloomberg Lab hosted local high school students to prepare them for careers on Wall Street

More than 80 students from seven local high schools spent the morning of Wednesday, February 18 at the University of South Florida Sarasota-Manatee campus to attend Wall Street Trading with Bloomberg Day.

Students were welcomed to campus by Interim Regional Chancellor Brett Kemker and Sarasota-Manatee Campus Dean of Muma College of Business Jean Kabongo.

“Today is more than just a visit,” said Kabongo, “it is an opportunity to step into the finance world and experience tools that professionals use every day on Wall Street and throughout the world.”

Kemker added, “You have probably heard the expression — ‘a picture is worth a thousand words.’ I believe that having this hands-on opportunity to learn about Wall Street trading with our Bloomberg Day is even more valuable.”

The David Kotok and Cumberland Advisors Bloomberg Lab on the Sarasota-Manatee campus features an electronic ticker ribbon and 12 Bloomberg Terminals, which provide access to real-time data from markets around the world and are identical to machines found at banks, investment houses and other financial firms.

During his remarks, Kemker emphasized campus’ dedication to serving the local community and faculty and staff’s close-knit connections with the students. He invited all of the attendees to come back to tour campus to explore how Sarasota-Manatee fits into their future plans. The Muma College of Business on the Sarasota-Manatee campus offers nine undergraduate degrees and an MBA program that fill critical local workforce needs such as accounting, risk management and insurance, hospitality, and cybersecurity.

Following the introduction, students attended four breakout sessions: introduction to Bloomberg Market, Wall Street trading insights, financial literacy and pathways to business degrees.

Wall Street Trading with Bloomberg Day is made possible thanks to generous donations from Cumberland Advisers, David Kotok, and Steve Drelich. Kotok and Cumberland provided the support that led to the creation of lab at USF Sarasota-Manatee in March 2017, as well as the upgrading of the technology in 2023.

Another Wall Street Trading with Bloomberg Day will be offered to local high school students in April 2026 at the University of South Florida Sarasota-Manatee campus.
