From connection to crowning: Fummy Nguyen reflects on his journey at USF Sarasota-Manatee

By Naomi Smilay, University Communications and Marketing

As Fummy Nguyen prepares to graduate, he reflects on a journey defined not just by his academic achievement but by the deep connections and community he found at the University of South Florida Sarasota-Manatee.

For Nguyen, campus life wasn’t just about classes and exams — it was about relationships. Whether through casual conversations or student organizations, he discovered a community that inspired him to grow personally and professionally.

"My favorite part was just coming to campus every day, seeing familiar faces, connecting with other students, and being involved," he said. "It made campus life exciting and made me feel like I was really part of something bigger."

Nguyen‘s impact didn’t go unnoticed. This past spring, he earned the Student Organization Leader of the Year award at the Campus Involvement and Leadership Awards, for his leadership of Club Moshi Moshi, a group made up of fans of the Japanese manga series “Spy X Family.” He also played a key role in welcoming new students as part of the campus orientation team, making it his mission to ensure that every new Bull felt at home.

"At orientations, I had the pleasure of helping incoming students navigate their first steps—making sure they felt comfortable, welcomed, and connected to the right resources," he said.

In addition to majoring in accounting, Nguyen threw himself into campus life, joining and leading multiple organizations. He was active in the American Chemical Society, Karaoke Club, All Bulls Tennis and Racket Club and The Adventure Club, as well as Club Moshi Moshi. As a USF Ambassador, he helped foster a welcoming environment for all students.

A highlight of his time at USF Sarasota-Manatee came during Homecoming 2024, when Nguyen was crowned Homecoming King—an honor that, for a "behind-the-scenes" leader, was a meaningful and humbling experience.

"I'm usually someone who focuses on contributing quietly," he said. "Being crowned King pushed me out of my comfort zone. It made me feel truly seen and appreciated by the community I care so much about."

After graduation, Nguyen plans to take a gap year to work, prepare for the CPA exam, and apply to graduate programs to continue advancing his career in accounting.

When asked what advice he would give future Bulls, Nguyen shared:

Spend your time in university really getting to know yourself. Explore your interests. Everyone at USF — whether you're here in Sarasota-Manatee or at another campus — is willing to help. Don’t be afraid to reach out and make the most of every opportunity.

As Nguyen steps into his next chapter, his story leaves an important reminder: at USF Sarasota-Manatee, it's the community you build — and the person you become — that defines your success.
