Steven C. Currall, PhD, the seventh president of the University of South Florida, visited USF Sarasota-Manatee today on his first official day on the job.
The visit was part of Currall’s Day 1 tour of all three USF Campuses, during which he spent time with faculty, staff and students in Tampa, St. Petersburg and Sarasota-Manatee.
“I’m thrilled to be a new member of the USF community and I’m delighted to be at USF Sarasota-Manatee today to visit this great campus,” he said. “One of my key priorities is thinking about how all three campuses work together in a synergistic way. I’m here to begin a listening tour to learn about this campus and the rest of the university to help us align our activities in a way that benefits students and increases research productivity.”
Currall succeeds Judy Genshaft, PhD, who retired June 30 after leading USF for more than 19 years.
Previously, Currall served as provost and vice president for academic affairs at Southern Methodist University in Dallas from 2016 to 2019. He oversaw all academic colleges/schools, as well as SMU Libraries, the Office of Research and Graduate Studies, the Division of Enrollment Services, curriculum, Institutional Planning and Effectiveness, Institutional Research, International Center, Center for Teaching Excellence, the Cary M. Maguire Center for Ethics and Public Responsibility, two satellite campuses and SMU Global and Online.
He also was the David B. Miller Endowed Professor and held academic appointments in the Cox School of Business, Dedman College of Humanities and Sciences and the Lyle School of Engineering.
Currall earned a Ph.D. in organizational behavior from Cornell University, a master’s degree in social psychology from the London School of Economics and Political Science, and a bachelor’s degree in psychology (cum laude) from Baylor University.
