Tutoring

The Academic Success Center (ASC) provides free tutoring and writing consultations to all actively enrolled University of South Florida Sarasota-Manatee campus students. Tutoring is provided for a variety of courses and subjects, such as Biology, Chemistry, Math, Statistics, and other subjects. For tutoring information on our other campuses, please visit:

Students are able to utilizing tutoring services on any of the three campuses. Students may choose between face-to-face or virtual online tutoring, but must have the necessary technology support for online sessions. To see a list of available subject areas, tutors, and availability, please click below at the appointment scheduler or refer to the following:

Face-to-Face in-person tutoring

  • You can view the availability of tutors by clicking on the link above to "Make a Tutoring Appointment". 
  • Select the face-to-face tutoring option for your subject area.
  • During the time of your in-person tutoring appointment, meet your tutor in the Student Success Lounge in SMC C107.

VIRTUAL ONLINE TUTORING

  • A strong internet connection is required for screen sharing and video conferencing via Microsoft Teams.
  • A functioning camera and microphone are highly recommended.
    1. Log in at least 5 minutes before your scheduled appointment.
    2. Click on your Microsoft Teams appointment link that your tutor sent you.
      • If you did not receive a Teams link, please reach out directly to your tutor.
    3. Click on "Join" meeting in the Microsoft Teams app or web browser window.
  • You must have access to a computer and internet for virtual online tutoring sessions.

E-TUTORING FOR WRITING CONSULTATIONS

  • Choose the "Writing" option while making your appointment.
  • Email your paper, report, document, etc. to your writing consultant, including:
    • The draft you're working on;
    • Assignment guidelines or instructions from your professor;
    • 2-3 questions you would like to discuss with your consultant;
    • Additional details (i.e. writing prompt, topic, question, specific concerns, etc.)
  • Submit your paper and prompt to your consultant at least an hour before your consultation session. Failing to do so may result in cancellation of your writing consultation.
  • Documents should be in Microsoft Word (.doc or .docx) format. 
  • You will meet with your writing consultant during your scheduled appointment to discuss and review the feedback.
  • Writing style guides for APA, MLA, Chicago style and other resources are also available under the “Tutoring Resources” tab.

EXPANDED ONLINE TUTORING

  • Additional 24/7 online tutoring support is available via TutorMe.
  • TutorMe offers USF students a free resource to connect with a live tutor for over 300 subjects.
  • Sessions are up to one hour long each, and are limited to 3 sessions per week per student.
  • Students can access the TutorMe tool through their Canvas courses - the course ID will automatically load into the TutorMe dashboard.

CANCELLATIONS AND NO-SHOWS

Students may cancel appointments at any time before their tutoring session starts. Students may cancel without penalty by either:

  • Clicking on "View in Bookings" on your confirmation email. Once in Bookings, select your appointment and click "Cancel".
  • Emailing your tutor directly or emailing the Academic Success Center.
  • Calling 941-359-4330.

However, we suggest that you cancel appointments as far in advance as possible to make sessions available to other students. Appointments are held for 15 minutes after the beginning of the scheduled session before it is officially cancelled and made available to students seeking walk-ins.

Students with three (3) no-shows will be restricted from scheduling new appointments for the remainder of the semester.

POSITION: ASC UNDERGRADUATE STUDENT TUTOR 

Job Summary:  Student Tutors provide learning support in selected coursework in which they have demonstrated high academic achievement.  General duties include facilitating individual and/or group study sessions, attendance at required tutor training sessions and meetings, and assisting other staff when requested. These positions are required to be in-person and not remote.

Nature of Work:  Tutors are able to work up to 20 hours per week. New tutors are expected to complete tutor training to maintain active tutor status. (More information regarding tutor training will be provided in later stages of the hiring process). Examples of typical duties for this position include:

  • Providing subject matter expertise in a given subject to assist with and support the learner's knowledge
  • Utilizing tutoring best practices to support student learning
  • Keeping the learner as the central focus of all work
  • Strengthening students’ ability to learn effectively and efficiently
  • Presenting themselves in an inviting, helpful, and approachable manner
  • Creating an atmosphere of mutual respect and trust for students and coworkers
  • Establishing collaborative working relationships with other tutors, instructors, and front desk staff
  • Flexibility regarding assigned tutoring areas which will vary depending on student needs
  • Continuous development of subject area knowledge through training and assigned activities
  • Attending meetings and trainings, as needed
  • Completing review assignments on-time 

The Academic Success Center seeks tutors for the following subject areas:

  • Biology (includes Biology I and II, Biochemistry, and others)
  • Chemistry (includes Chemistry I and II, and Organic Chemistry I and II)
  • Calculus (includes I, II, and III, and Business Calculus)
  • Math Courses (includes Intermediate Algebra, Finite Mathematics, College Algebra, and Pre-Calculus)
  • Physics (includes Physics I and II)
  • Psychology
  • Accounting and Finance (includes Principles of Financial Accounting, Managerial Accounting, and Principles of Finance)
  • Spanish
  • Writing

Pay Rate:  $12.00 an hour

Schedule: Variable and flexible according to class schedule and ASC hours of operation.

Minimum Qualifications: Currently enrolled, USF students in good academic standing with a minimum overall GPA of 3.25. Must have completed at least one academic year at USF (24+ credit hours). Grade of B+ or higher in courses in the tutored subject(s).

Work Location: Tutors are expected to be available to students for both drop-in tutoring and scheduled appointments.  Tutors offer in-person tutoring and writing consultation to students out of the Student Success Lounge in SMC C107 at the USF Sarasota-Manatee campus.
