USF Sarasota-Manatee Campus Board member Dr. Anila Jain ’81 has been named recipient of the 2019 University of South Florida Alumni Association Donald A. Gifford Service Award.
The longtime USF and USFSM supporter and Manatee County resident was recognized on Oct. 10 at the Alumni Awards Dinner at the USF Marshall Student Center Ballroom in Tampa.
“It’s always an honor to be recognized by my alma mater,” said Jain, who graduated from USF in 1981 with a biology degree.
A physician renowned for her volunteerism, Jain has been a USF leader for decades, serving on the boards of the USF Foundation, USF Alumni Association (past chair), USF Bulls Club and USFSM Campus Board.
She was elected president of the National Alumni Association in 2003 and appointed to the USF Foundation Board of Trustees. In 1985, she received the USF Distinguished Alumni Award,and in 2001 she received the USF Sarasota-Manatee President’s Distinguished Alumni Award. She is a founding member of USF Women in Leadership and Philanthropy.
Her generous financial gifts include multiple legacy endowments and scholarships benefiting several areas within the University of South Florida, including USF Sarasota Manatee.
In addition, Jain is an American Medical Women’s Association National Service Award recipient, a member of the Kappa Delta Sorority and former national chair of the Kappa Delta Foundation.
Also recognized at the ceremony were Joanna Sigfred Fowler, PhD, (Distinguished Alumni Award); Gilbert King (Distinguished Alumni Award); Geraldine I. Twine (Distinguished Alumni Award) and Richard A. Beard III (Class of ’56 Award).
USF Homecoming kicks off in Sarasota-Manatee with the crowning of USFSM Royalty
The two represented USFSM – joining Homecoming Royalty from other campus – at last week’s Homecoming ball, parade and football game in Tampa. They also enjoyed dinner with USF President Steven C. Currall, PhD.
Serafino and Bedinghaus are USFSM Ambassadors and longtime friends. The two attended the same schools, although at different grade levels, and have known each other for years.
“We’re both Manatee County born and bred,” Bedinghaus said. “I’m excited to represent USFSM.”
In addition to the crowning ceremony, other activities during USFSM Homecoming Week included goat yoga, a lip-sync battle and dodgeball.
‘Ready Player Register’ class registration event set for Oct. 29-30 at the FCCI Rotunda
The USFSM Office of Records and Registration, Student Government Association and the Craftabull Club will present “Ready Player Register,” a class registration drive on Tuesday, Oct. 29, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., and Wednesday, Oct. 30, from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m., at the FCCI Rotunda.
The twice-yearly drive reminds students to register early for spring and fall classes.
“It’s important to register as soon as possible so students can get their preferred classes and to plan for financial aid,” Assistant Director of Records and Registration Glenna Schubert said. “It also leaves time to make changes if a student wants to add or drop a class.”
For this semester’s drive, organizers are embracing the theme “Ready Player Register” after the movie and book, Ready Player One, which was adopted for this year’s Common Read program.
The Craftabull student club will provide decorations.
“This is our first event, and since we’re a new club we wanted to show our creativity and help in any way we could,” club President Madison Duelge, a psychology major, said. “As someone who works in the Admissions area, I also understand the importance of these registration drives.”
Duelge said club members will likely start decorating the night before. She anticipates a colorful ’80s theme with fun video game references to entice students to the registration tables.
The event also will include snacks, refreshments and music. Student Government is co-sponsoring this semester’s event.
USF Sarasota-Manatee sets Nov. 1 deadline for new, transfer student applications
First, prospective freshman students (first time in college) must submit their applications for admission and SAT/ACT test scores by Nov. 1 to receive priority consideration for enrollment during the Fall 2020 semester.
Second, transfer students from other colleges seeking admission to USF Sarasota-Manatee
for Spring 2020 must apply by Nov. 1 and complete their applications for admission
by Nov. 15.
Transfer students can apply in three easy steps:

- Submit a $30 application fee
- Submit your college transcript
Transfer applicants with between 30 and 59 transferable credits must also submit a high school transcript.
“This year, the new Nov. 1 deadlines will help us provide better and more personalized
service to advise both our transfer and freshmen populations,” said Brandon Avery,
associate director of admissions. “That being said, for transfer students looking
to join us for the spring semester, or freshmen for the fall, it is more important
than ever to get all of your admissions information to us in a timely manner.”

Graduate Open House set Nov. 16 at USFSM
Professionals seeking a career boost and students considering graduate school can attend USF Sarasota-Manatee’s Graduate Open House on Saturday, Nov. 16.
The 10 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. session will be held at USFSM’s campus, 8350 N. Tamiami Trail, Sarasota. Learn about graduate degree programs, the admissions process and academic life at USFSM. The session is free.
“Our Graduate Open House is an excellent opportunity for potential graduate students to speak with faculty in their program of interest, learn about the application process and visit campus,” Admissions Counselor Cassidy Garbutt said. “We encourage anyone interested in graduate study at University of South Florida Sarasota-Manatee to attend.”

Bank of America Brunch on the Bay tickets, sponsorships are now on sale
Sponsorships and individual tickets are now available for Bank of America Brunch on the Bay, the University of South Florida Sarasota-Manatee’s signature fundraising event for student scholarships.
This year’s Brunch is scheduled for Sunday, Nov. 3, from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., at the USFSM campus, 8350 N. Tamiami Trail, Sarasota.

USF Sarasota-Manatee Resource Fair tackles housing, food insecurity
The 2019 Fall Resources Fair was held Tuesday from noon to 3 p.m. at the campus’ Selby Auditorium. The event was free and open to the public.
“It’s very important that we host this event in order to show students and the community the resources that are out there to help them,” USFSM senior Yolanda Woody, one of the organizers, said.
The event showcased community groups that are making a difference to students, senior citizens and young families across Sarasota and Manatee counties. The event’s sponsors included the USFSM Student Government Association, Office of Military and Veterans Success and USFSM Food and Housing Insecurity Committee.
Woody, who belongs to the committee, said its members hope to stage another resource fair in the spring.
Tour and explore Sarasota County career opportunities
All majors are welcome to visit Sarasota County government on Friday, Nov. 8, to network and learn about career and internship opportunities in county government.
County Career Day runs from 8:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Students will gather at USFSM’s FCCI Rotunda before traveling to the county offices. USFSM will provide transportation, lunch and key introductions. Space is limited to the first 20 students.

Critical thinking certification workshops set for Oct. 25, Nov. 22
USF Sarasota-Manatee will offer one-day workshops on Oct. 25 and Nov. 22 to enhance one of the most sought-after skill sets in today’s workforce: critical thinking.
Each one-day Critical Thinking Certification Workshop will be held from 8 a.m. to
4:30 p.m. in Room A320A at USFSM, 8350 N. Tamiami Trail, Sarasota.
Workshops are open to all professionals, including CEOs, business owners, managers,
human resources professionals, entrepreneurs, educators and lifelong learners. Early
registration is $79 up to one week prior to registration. Regular registration is
$99.
The registration fee includes lunch and the Watson-Glaser assessment. Participants
must bring a laptop computer or mobile device to complete the online assessment.

“Based on my research and conversations, critical thinking is one of the most important
skill sets for both the current and future workforce,” said Greg Smogard, PhD, assistant

Grad Stampede scheduled for Oct. 22 at FCCI Rotunda
Seniors expecting to graduate in December can order their cap and gown, reserve class rings and sign up for free USF Alumni Association memberships during Grad Stampede, scheduled for Tuesday, Oct. 22, from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m., at the FCCI Rotunda.
The event helps upcoming grads get a jump on commencement.

Internship opportunities at state capital
The Florida Institute of Government at USF in Tampa (http://fiog.usf.edu/) is partnering with the Institute for Public Policy and Leadership at USFSM to host an information session for the USF Tallahassee Internship Program (TIP) and the Legislative Internship Program (LIP) for the current academic year.
The session, which will focus on program details and the application process, is set for Monday, Oct. 21, at 10 a.m., in Room B335 at USFSM. Students and faculty are urged learn about these important internships. Students in the TIP program would intern at the state capital.

USFSM students can get free flu shots and enjoy refreshments on Oct. 23, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., at the campus’ Student Commons.
USFSM employee vaccinations are scheduled Oct. 22, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., at the Benefit Fair in the Selby Auditorium.

CARVERCON 2019 coming to USF Sarasota-Manatee
The CARVERCON 2019 security conference is coming to USF Sarasota-Manatee.
Hear from security experts, including Luke Bencie, author of The CARVER Target Analysis and Vulnerability Assessment Methodology: A Practical Guide for Evaluating Security Vulnerabilities.
The conference is scheduled for Friday, Nov. 8, from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Security professionals nationwide are expected, including professionals from the military, law enforcement and intelligence communities, as well as security directors from Fortune 500 companies.
CARVERCON debuted last November in Washington, D.C., but after a snowstorm organizers relocated the national conference to the USF Sarasota-Manatee campus, 8350 N. Tamiami Trail, Sarasota.

Self-defense class offered for students, alumni and others
The University of South Florida Sarasota-Manatee is partnering with New College of Florida to hold a free self-defense class for students, faculty, staff and alumni.
The class is scheduled Tuesday, Oct. 22, from 1:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m., at New College’s fitness center, 5639 General Twinning Blvd., Sarasota.

USFSM hosts Career Coaching sessions for students

- Ann King, a talented IT industry veteran with extensive knowledge of sales and marketing and consulting. King worked in executive positions at software and hardware companies for more than 35 years. Her motto: “Think!” She will be on hand to talk with students from 10 a.m. to noon on Oct. 17
- Bonnie Johnson, a retired senior sales/marketing executive in the information technology industry. Johnson has more than 25 years of experience in key executive positions focused on information technology and clinical consulting. Johnson’s motto is: “Make your job a reality!” She will be available from 10 a.m. to noon on Oct. 24 and Nov. 17.
