Residence Hall Gets A Name: April 24, 2024

The first-ever residence hall under construction at the University of South Florida Sarasota-Manatee now has a name: Atala Hall, after a rare tropical butterfly that feeds and breeds in the landscaping on campus.

Atala butterflies are small with inky black wings, speckled with iridescent blue spots and a bright red body. Once thought to be extinct, they are making a comeback thanks to the popularity of its host plant in Florida, known as coontie.

USF Sarasota-Manatee Regional Chancellor Karen Holbrook announced the named duing a Campus Board meeting.

Student Housing Construction Update: JULY 5, 2023

Workers this month reached a key moment in the construction of the first-ever residence hall on the University of South Florida Sarasota-Manatee campus. Crews have installed the first of almost 600 precast concrete panels that will make up the walls of the six-story, 100,000-square-foot student center and residence hall set to open for the fall 2024 semester. Installation of the panels will take about three months to complete.

As the latest phase of construction was beginning, former Sarasota-Manatee campus CEO Laurey Stryker was on campus and shared her excitement about the impact the facility will have on the campus and on the university.
