Institute for Public Policy & Leadership
The Institute for Public Policy and Leadership (IPPL) at the USF Sarasota-Manatee campus was established in 2006 to conduct non-partisan research, discussion, training and education on public policy, administration, leadership and civic engagement in support of the needs of the citizens and governmental agencies of Sarasota and Manatee counties.
Currently, the IPPL engages the preeminent academic resources of the University of South Florida as well as local, national and global experts to guide a dynamic exchange of ideas about important policy and leadership issues. IPPL hosts lecture series, policy forums, seminars and workshops to stimulate meaningful, civil discussion and promote public discourse in our community.
The institute has hosted many events on the USF Sarasota-Manatee campus and in the Sarasota-Manatee community including local political candidate forums, regional summits on School Readiness and Workforce policy issues. as well as international topics such as the US-CHINA Townhall series organized by the National Committee on US-CHINA Relations.
In 2019, IPPL finalized an agreement between the University of South Florida School of Public Affairs and the John Scott Dailey Florida Institute of Government at USF to collaborate to provide joint programming, internships, academic courses and professional development opportunities at the USF Sarasota-Manatee campus. The goal of this partnership is to create a community of students, scholars and citizens prepared for civic engagement in the Sarasota-Manatee region.
Through the institute's collaboration with the Florida Institute of Government we jointly recruit and evaluate USF Sarasota-Manatee campus students for the school's undergraduate public policy internship programs as follows:
- Legislative Internship Program
- Tallahassee Internship Program
- USF in D.C. Program
- Washington Center Internship Program
These programs provide a place where students can acquire the skills and knowledge to become informed citizens while working with government entities.
