Steven Miller, Ph.D. CPCU, ARM
Dr. Steven Miller is an Associate Professor of Finance in Risk Management/Insurance
at the USF Sarasota-Manatee campus. Prior to his academic career, Steve worked as
a consultant for Aon and Marsh where Steve helped corporate risk managers leverage
data and systems to meet risk management objectives. While consulting, Steve was based
in Chicago, New York and London, and he has extensive international experience, managing
consulting engagements around the globe.
Steve joined the USF Sarasota-Manatee campus in the summer of 2019 to serve as leader
of the Risk Management and Insurance (RMI) program. Steve’s prior academic experience
includes joining Saint Joseph’s University in 2009 to launch their new RMI major.
Steve also served as an expert in Risk Management and Insurance education under a
program sponsored by China's Ministry of Education. Steve collaborated with China’s
Central University of Finance and Economics, the university in charge of the accreditation
process for all Risk Management and Insurance programs in China. The three-year summer
visiting position was designed to share educational best practices as well as to support
a cultural exchange in RMI teaching and research.
In 2017, The American Risk and Insurance Association (ARIA), the world’s premier academic
risk and insurance organization, invited Steve to speak at their annual conference
on strategies to build successful RMI programs. In 2019, Steve was recognized by ARIA
as the winner of the Strickler Innovation in Instruction Award.
Steve’s academic research focuses on enterprise risk management and corporate governance.
Steve has published articles in a variety of academic journals, including Journal
of Risk and Insurance; Journal of Banking and Finance; Journal of Corporate Finance;
Journal of Insurance Regulation; and Journal of Insurance Issues.
